This ONE Tactic Will Increase Your Potential for Success
Do this to find your ideal audience on LinkedIn
I hear this question a lot.
"…what is the ONE thing I can do to increase my benefit from LinkedIn?"
It's a tough question to answer but I've heard it since 2008 when I co-wrote one of the first books on LinkedIn. It's akin to asking how you can you complete a “journey” in “one step?”
So, is there a single magic trick to boost your LinkedIn success?
Well, maybe not magic, but here’s the biggest thing - make sure you know how to find your audience on LinkedIn.
No audience = No success... No matter what you do.
And that’s a bummer no matter how we might try to reframe it.
This doesn't have to be that tough.
There is "one" really powerful tactic to use on #LinkedIn to help find your audience with precision.
Ok, what is it?
Leverage your LinkedIn Searches to identify the potential audience that you can build.
How?
Let's explain this through an example:
Assume we were hosting a podcast on content marketing and wanted to achieve three things:
Find guests for our podcast
Find podcast collaborators (who can help create audience exposure)
Start to build a potential audience to listen to our podcast
---> See the graphic below for a visualization of how this works <---
Search #1: Basic Search
Type in 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧 into the search box.
It returns about 333,000 results. Clearly, not a filtered approach to finding the right people. No tangible benefit.
Let’s try to streamline this.
Search #2: Use Quotes Around Our Key Phrase
This creates an exact phrase search.
Type in “𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧” in the search box.
That would give us about 18,000 responses with that specific phrase. This can be our potential audience building list.
Search #3: Keep the Quotes, But Add the Word AND
Since we’re looking for those in content marketing and an interest in podcasts, type in “𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧” AND 𝙋𝙤𝙙𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙩.
This returns 793 results.
We now have a targeted list for potential guests .
One more...
Search #4: Focus on 3 Phrases Using AND: Type in “Content Marketer” AND Podcast AND Audience
This returns 288 results!
This is manageable and creates a list of potential collaborators who already have an audience!
The question was, "…what is the ONE thing I can do to increase my benefit from LinkedIn?"
It's leveraging the LinkedIn Search function effectively.
This example rapidly identified target audiences with precision on LinkedIn.
That's a great first step and one you can master quickly. After this, the focus shifts to outreach & relationship building (and I'll touch on how I do it in a future newsletter).
Try this on your own.
Can you find your audience list with 3 phrases?
